Best used cars for under £200 per month

From sporty hatchbacks to big SUVs: you can find the perfect used car for under £200 a month

Sep 30, 2019

If you're looking for something new to drive with a budget of £200 per month, heading to the used market is likely to give you a very positive surprise.

That kind of money might not sound like a lot in the grand sceme of car buying, but it opens up a very large door to some very exciting driving opportunities. Family hatchbacks, large SUVs, and even sporty coupes all fall within the realms of this budget.

Many of them are barely two years old, so in some cases they will still have some of the manufacturer's warranty remaining - another very handy bonus.

The thing making this all possible is PCP finance (personal contact purchase). The idea is the cost of a car is spread over an initial deposit followed by a series of monthly payments that make paying for a car a much more manageable concept.

It gives you the option of of buying the car at the end via an optonal final payment, or handing it back with nothing more to pay. Depending on its value at the end of the agreement, you may also be able to trade it in against a new model.

Read on for our pick of the best used cars available for just £200 per month.

Best used cars for under £200 per month

1. Mini Hatchback

Best used car under £200 per month for driving fun

Our pick Mini Cooper S
Latest Mini Cooper S deals from £11,290
Monthly finance from £156

The hatchback market is slowly growing hotter and hotter, but few cars – at any price – are as much fun to drive as a Mini Cooper S. The prices we've picked out are for the petrol version, as that's the only one you'd really want to consider. We've also taken the liberty of making sure you've got five doors, as any less than that and the Cooper S becomes somewhat unnusable as a day-to-day run-around.

Among rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, the Cooper S is definitely the benchmark when it comes to styling - the bulky front end and bonnet scoop make give an imposing and properly sporty look. The equipment list isnt bad either, especially in this S spec, with sports seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and sports suspension.

2. Renault Kadjar

Best used car under £200 per month for families

Our pick Renault Kadjar Dynamique Nav
Latest Renault Kadjar deals from £9,299
Monthly finance from £148

Underneath the Renault badge on the bonnet, you'll find that the Kadjar uses the same mechanical parts as the popular Nissan Qashqai. The Renault is a better car, though, thanks to its larger boot and higher-quality interior. Cars that were on the road before February 2018 also benefit from a four-year warranty, providing extra reassurance for used buyers.

The particular model we've picked here is the Dynamique Nav trim that comes with a seven-inch touchscreen with Tom-Tom sat-nav as standard, 17-inch alloy wheels and a whole load of additional kit including air-conditioning, cruise control, DAB radio and bluetooth connectivity.

As a crossover, the Kadjar is taller than a standard hatchback, bringing a higher driving position and making it easier to strap children into the back seats. You can choose from these well-equipped Dynamique Nav models with either petrol or diesel engines for under £200 per month.

3. Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Best used car under £200 per month for Mercedes style and luxury

Our pick Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG Line
Latest Mercedes-Benz A Class deals from £12,250
Monthly finance from £163

Despite the launch of an all-new Mercedes A-Class last year, demand for the earlier model is still strong, and prices have yet to drop considerably. This helps to keep finance costs low, and there are currently 124 A-Class cars on BuyaCar for less than £200 per month.

The A-Class is intended to give you a sporty driving experience, but the aggressively stiff ride will not be for everyone. You do get an artificial leather interior, an 8-inch media display and climate control though, which help to boost the qualiy levels, and theres Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities as well.

We've gone for models with the AMG Line trim, which adds to the sporty nature of the A-Class with an additional body kit with lowered suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. You'll only find diesel versions of this car for under £200 per month, but we think this would be a worthy investment.

4. BMW 3 series

Best used car under £200 per month for premium quality

Our pick BMW 3 Series M Sport
Latest BMW 3 Series deals from £12,599
Monthly finance from £182

If you want a little luxury and prestige for your £200 per month, then you should set your sights on a small executive saloon. Options here include the Audi A4, Mercedes C Class and Lexus IS, but the best bet in this price bracket is the BMW 3 Series. It’s the best to drive and there are plenty to choose from.

Both petrol and diesel models are available within this budget, but it's hard to overlook the efficient, smooth and quiet 320d. In particular, we've gone for 3 Series models in M Sport spec, which comes with a huge list of equipment additions, but also adds a sport bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels and stiffer suspension for that ultra-sensitive - albeit noticeably rougher - ride.

An all-new 3 Series hit the salesrooms in 2019 - meaning deals on these older models (pictured above) should be coming through thick and fast.

5. Mazda 6

Best used car under £200 per month for all-round versatility

Our pick Mazda 6 Sport Nav
Latest Mazda 6 deals from £10,295
Monthly finance from £187

The Mazda 6 adds a dash of style to the large family saloon format – a type of car not generally known for glamour. But the Mazda doesn’t forget the job of being a practical jack-of-all-trades either. It’s spacious, economical and has a reputation for good reliability, so it reamains an excellent choice, despite its replacement with a new model this year.

Within this budget you can go for a top-of-the-range Sport Nav model, which will give you a plethora of additional extras as standard including climate-control, privacy glass, 19-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera and a head-up display. The excellent value of this Mazda 6 is an opportunity for you to own a very up-market and high quality saloon.

6. Peugeot 308 SW

Best used car under £200 per month for load space

Our pick Peugeot 308 SW GT Line
Latest Peugeot 308 SW deals from £7,099
Monthly finance from £126

The cavernous 660-litre load area of the Peugeot 308 SW is the biggest in its class, although this does come at a cost to rear passenger comfort (it's not the car for carrying 6ft adults in the back). The minimalist dashboard looks high-tech, thanks to a central screen that keeps buttons to a minimum on all but entry-level Access models.

Within this price range, we've found 308 SW examples in GT Line spec, which adds a few styling touches on the outside such as twin-exhaust pipes, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, while you also gain a reversing camera and fancy red stiching inside. A car with this much tech is hard to come by at such a modest price.

7. Vauxhall Mokka X

Best used car under £200 per month for nearly-new savings

Our pick Vauxhall Mokka X Elite Nav
Latest Vauxhall Mokka X deals from £10,162
Monthly finance from £144

No matter what type of car you're looking to buy for under £200, there's almost certainly a Vauxhall that fits the bill. There's a seven-seater (Zafira Tourer), a big estate car (Insignia), sporty hatchback (Astra GTC), and even a convertible (Cascada).

Unfortunately for Vauxhall, having its badge on a car seems to spell an large loss of value as soon as it's driven away by its first owner, even though the current range is generally pretty good. On the used market, these big price reductions result in cheap finance deals.

Which is why you have a pick of 2018 Vauxhall Mokka X models to choose from, and you'll be able to help yourself to the top of the range Elite nav spec models, which come with a whole host of additions to make the prospect of owning one much more enticing.

8. BMW 2 Series Coupe

Best used car under £200 per month for performance

Latest BMW 2 Series Coupe deals from £9,899
Monthly finance from £149

The BMW 2 Series Coupe sits comfortably within this £200 per month price range.

Even entry level cars provide a thump of acceleration, and combine comfort with sprightly performance in bends, making the car fun to drive. You'll normally find a few cars around the £200 per month mark, although prices sometimes creep over the limit by a few pounds.

Even early 218d diesel cars should meet current Euro 6 emissions standards, so you won't have to worry about future low emission zone charges - it's worth double-checking to make sure, though.

9. Dacia Duster

Best used car under £200 per month for value

Our pick Dacia Duster Prestige
Latest Dacia Duster deals from £8,287
Monthly finance from £143

The Dacia Duster offers an enormous amount of car for your money, giving you a good-sized SUV for less than the cost of a supermini like the Ford Fiesta. Avoid the spartan entry-level Access models, as they really do offer little in the way of equipment. We've gone for the Prestige models, as they offer a much more useable amount of kit for a very affordable price.

The new version of the Duster, which went on sale last year remains above the £200 per month threshold, but you'd barely know the difference from outside, so it won't make the older model (pictured) look too dated.

10. Honda CR-V

Best used car under £200 per month for the space and height of an SUV

Our pick Honda CR-V 4x4
Latest Honda CR-V deals from £9,999
Monthly finance from £173

Combining the rugged looks and high driving position of an off-roader with the practicality of an estate makes the CR-V a formidable family car. Add in high-tech safety features and a great reputation for reliability, and the CR-V becomes quite a tempting proposition.

Be careful which one you go for, though - even though this car looks like an off-roader, most models are front-wheel drive only. If you need to get out of muddy fields on a regular basis, make sure you pick the four-wheel drive versions, although you may need to stretch your budget a little.
