The Astra GTC is the model you need if you’re after a three-door Vauxhall Astra. That’s because the standard hatchback is now available only as a five-door, so you'll need to look for an Astra GTC if you'd rather something a bit sleeker.

Occasionally listed as the Vauxhall GTC, the Astra GTC is so much more than a three-door version of the old Astra, though. Almost every body panel is different, while the suspension is tweaked to make it sharper to drive. There’s even a seriously rapid VXR version.

All of which means the Astra GTC is a rival to cars like the VW Scirocco, Renault Megane Coupe and Seat Leon SC. In many ways, we see the three-door Astra GTC as one of the hidden gems of the Vauxhall range, not least because all versions come with a high level of equipment as standard.

Launched in 2011, the Astra GTC remained in production until 2018, long after the Astra hatchback upon which it was based was replaced by its successor. You can even find some models registered in 2019.

There’s a wide range of engines to choose from, although the lineup was trimmed towards the end of production. The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine will be a good choice for most buyers, especially if you opt for the 140hp version. It makes the car quicker than the 120hp unit, but you’re likely to see similar fuel economy.

The 1.6-litre turbocharged unit produces 200hp, but for even greater thrills, you need the 280hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the Astra GTC VXR. This car offers the pace to keep up with some of the best hot hatchbacks on the market, with a setup developed at the legendary Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany.

Back in the real world, the 1.6-litre CDTi and 2.0-litre CDTi diesel engines are perfect if you spend most of your time on the motorways of Britain. The official fuel economy figures are a little optimistic, but you should see 45mpg from the 1.6-litre unit and 50mpg from the 2.0-litre. Finally, the 2.0-litre BiTurbo produces 195hp and offers a tempting blend of performance and economy.

If the three-door Vauxhall Astra GTC sounds like your kind of car, read on to discover some of the best deals on the Sport, Limited Edition, SRi and BiTurbo trim levels, as well as info on the high-performance VXR version.

Vauxhall Astra GTC Sport

We could accuse Vauxhall of offering far too many trim levels on the Astra hatchback, but things are much simpler on the three-door Astra GTC. The other bit of good news is that there isn’t really an entry-level version; the Sport trim would be a good mid-range version on a standard hatchback.

Highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, air-conditioning, a three-spoke leather-covered steering wheel, cruise control, MP3/CD player with digital radio, USB connection, leather steering wheel with audio controls, six airbags and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Vauxhall Astra GTC Limited Edition

The Limited Edition is the next step up the Astra GTC trim ladder, but the exact spec could be different, depending on the age of the car. Earlier models feature 20-inch alloy wheels, dark-tinted rear windows, Bluetooth and a Limited Edition styling kit.

By the end of production, the specification was even more substantial. You get the same 20-inch alloy wheels, but the package also includes sports front seats with leather facings, an ergonomic driver’s seat, sat-nav and a full VXR styling kit.

Vauxhall Astra GTC SRi

By the end of production, the three-door Vauxhall Astra GTC range had been trimmed to just the Limited Edition and SRi models. Highlights of the later model include 18-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, OnStar personal connectivity with a 4G WiFi hotspot, sports front seats, automatic wipers, MP3/CD player with Bluetooth and a USB port, front centre armrest with storage facility and automatic headlights.

An earlier Astra GTC SRi will feature everything that’s included on the Sport, plus sports front seats, automatic wipers, automatic headlights, front centre armrest, front door sill covers and dark-tinted windows.

Vauxhall Astra GTC BiTurbo

The Astra GTC BiTurbo is a rare car, but if you’re after an economical diesel car with the performance to rival a hot hatchback, it’s hard to ignore. It’s based on the SRi model, but you get a lot more equipment for your money.

On the outside, the BiTurbo makeover extends to a sports style front bumper, side sills, rear lower skirt, rear spoiler and body-coloured grille bar. These cosmetic upgrades work well with the lowered and uprated sports suspension and visible dual branch exhaust pipes.

On the inside, the Astra GTC BiTurbo features a flat-bottomed steering wheel, unique floor mats, alloy-effect sports pedals and an electric handbrake.

Vauxhall Astra GTC VXR

Not to be confused with a mere trim level, the Astra GTC VXR is a performance model in its own right. Highlights include a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing a substantial 280hp, a chassis developed on a race track, HiPerStrut front suspension, a limited-slip differential - for maintaining greater grip when accelerating - and a full VXR exterior makeover.

You also get 19-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch media system, VXR sports seats, a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel with VXR logo, unique VXR instrument graphics, VXR floor mats and leather gear knob, VXR sports pedals and VXR alloy-effect door sill covers. You should be left in no doubt that you’re driving a VXR model.

Look out for Astra GTC VXR models with optional 20-inch alloy wheels and the upgraded Performance Seat Pack, which features electric adjustment and heated seats in the front.
