Best pick-up deals

Pick-ups can tow and carry a huge amount of kit, but some models are better value than others. Here are some of the best pick-up deals

Looking to pick up a pick-up without having to pick up a huge bill? You aren’t alone. Pick-up trucks are amongst the most versatile cars on the road. They can haul all kinds of cargo from A to B, along with towing impressively heavy trailers or caravans. They can also be equipped with powerful diesel engines and smooth automatic gearboxes to make them capable high-mileage cruisers.

While pick-ups may be traditionally used to support businesses, many models are now stuffed with high-tech equipment including the most modern of features, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making them much more appealing family cars than they used to be.

To help you find the best pick-up deal, below we've rounded up our favourite pick-ups. They vary in their strengths, with some of them offering the best all-round value, some being the best for rock-bottom prices, some standing out for their equipment levels and others for their rugged engineering. What all of the offers below share, is that they translate to considerable savings over buying a brand new pick-up.

Regardless of what makes each of the shortlisted pick-ups stand out, they all pack quite the practical punch. For example, four-wheel-drive, large load bays and seating for five are par for the course. While pick-ups are normally offered in a range of body styles, one of the most popular is the ‘double-cab’ format, which features front and rear seats and four doors.

Other common types are ‘single-cab’ (with front seats only) and ‘extended cab’ or ‘king cab’ (which have front and rear seats but only full-size doors for the front row). Having a less practical cab normally makes a pick-up more affordable and potentially means you get a longer load bay, so if you would rather have the leftover money and a little more load space than the extra seats and/or doors, they can be a great option.

Manufacturers often quote ‘maximum’ figures for payload and towing capacities. Sometimes it is only the most powerful versions of a pick-up that come with those headline limits, so be sure to check the small print of each model when shopping around.

As pick-ups are often used as commercial vehicles, they can be listed excluding VAT. This is because VAT-registered companies can claim the tax back. If you are not buying through a business, then you will need to add 20% to any prices excluding VAT, though.

Best pick-up deals

1. Nissan Navara

Nissan offers a 100,000-mile, five-year warranty on all Navara models, so when driving a nearly new model there should be plenty of worry-free motoring ahead. The Navara can tow up to 3,500kg, carry up to 1,160kg of luggage in its load bed and transport up to five people, including the driver. All things considered, the big Nissan is one capable vehicle.

Every model comes with four-wheel-drive, although like many 4x4 pick-ups only two-wheel-drive should be used when travelling on dry tarmac. In the Navara, the driver can change between two- and four-wheel-drive using a dial on the dash, making it very easy to switch between all-terrain four-wheel-drive mode and more economical two-wheel-drive mode.

Nissan has pared back its range of Navara models, meaning that Acenta trim is the best option and this comes with a diesel engine and a manual gearbox. As for deals, pre-registered models can save you around £2,500 on the price of a new model.

2. Toyota Hilux

From summer 2021, all Toyotas come with a class-leading 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty, so the Hilux is a great option for anyone who appreciates a long manufacturer warranty from a company that has a reputation for making very reliable vehicles. There is one catch; servicing must be done through an official Toyota centre. While this will be more expensive than using an independent garage, it does mean Toyota trained mechanics will be the ones looking after your car, so you should get expert service.

If you choose to go elsewhere, the warranty lasts three years or 60,000 miles, which is about standard for modern cars. Happily, older second-hand models - which left the factory with the old five-year and 100,000-mile warranty - can qualify for the extended cover, too, provided you take yours to Toyota for servicing.

If you are looking for a pickup that can function as your main car, even if you are a family driver, then a double cab Invincible model offers a great combination of practicality and creature comforts. For example, you will be able to tow up to 3,500kg with it, while alloy wheels, heated seats in the front, and front and rear parking sensors (handy as the Hilux is pretty large) are all available.

Being so popular, pre-registered deals are few and far between, so for good savings you will need to cast your net a little wider - more specifically to models that are up to two years old with a couple of thousand miles under their belts can give you much of that new car feel for a far lower price.

3. Fiat Fullback

Unlike pick-ups such as the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara, the Fiat Fullback has not been on sale for decades and enjoyed huge popularity across the globe. Does that mean you should worry about reliability and whether the Fullback is any good? No. Fiat cheated somewhat by collaborating with Mitsubishi to make its pick-up. Now, Mitsubishi has a seriously strong reputation when it comes to making tough pick-up trucks.

The Fullback can tow up to 2.1 tonnes and carry up to one tonne in its truck bed. All models come with a 2.4-litre diesel engine, although there is the choice of 150hp or 180hp versions - both are plenty powerful. That said, if you plan on towing a particularly large trailer or caravan, the extra power from the 180hp version is helpful, but fuel consumption will be worse.

The Fullback was removed from sale in 2019, so even the newest models are a couple of years old. Compared to basically identical Mitsubishi L200s of the same age, the Fullback is often hundreds, if not thousands, more affordable, so could be worth a look if you're considering the L200.

4. Ford Ranger

Over the years the Ford Ranger has grown to become one of the most rugged pick-ups on the market. As a result, the Ranger is now one of the most popular pick-ups in the UK. Ford offers a range of different models from basic ‘XL’ models designed to be used and abused as workhorses, which often find their way to farms and building sites, all the way up to semi-high-performance Raptor models, which are quite pricey but look very menacing with flared bodywork and big chunky tires.

Below Raptor models and above XL versions are variants like Wildtrak and Wolftrak. These are a blend of practical and lavish and are therefore great for those wanting a pick-up for social and commercial use. The rear seats are plenty big enough for most passengers and the load area doubles a huge boot. We would recommend finding a model with a lockable canopy on the rear, though, if you plan on transporting lots of luggage and items such as pedal bikes and scooters that could otherwise be easily taken by unscrupulous folk.

The Ranger has a maximum towing weight of 3,500kg and a maximum payload of 1,252kg, which puts it up there with the best in class. When hunting for the best deals, pre-reg deals don’t tend to mean huge savings, but if you look for models that are roughly a year old, you can expect a saving of roughly 10% compared with the list prices.

5. Volkswagen Amarok

Volkswagen Amarok front three quarters view

Where some pick-ups are sold on their rugged image, the VW Amarok attracts people for a different reason. That is, it is remarkably car-like to drive. Inside the cabin has clear links to the interior of a VW Golf of the same age - making it feel solid and high quality - albeit with added chunkiness. All the controls are nice and easy to use, with the steering being light and the media system laid out intuitively.

All models made after 2016 come with powerful V6 diesel engines, which when combined with an automatic gearbox makes for very easy cruising indeed. There were a handful of different versions of the 3.0-litre engine and it is the mid-range 224hp variant that gets our vote. The extra power of the 254hp version is great for faster driving, but only if you can live with the higher fuel consumption. All models come with four-wheel-drive and the overwhelming majority of models come with a rather good automatic gearbox.

Volkswagen stopped making the original Amarok in 2020 ready for the 2022 replacement, so used pick-ups from this generation will be 20-plate or older. Amaroks from 2016 can be scooped up for well under £30,000, while seven-year-old models with a less powerful 2.0-litre engine, can be found for less than £20,000. ‘Trendline’ is the entry-level specification, with ‘Highline’ being a more plush trim having heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors and leather upholstery.

6. SsangYong Musso

The SsangYong Musso might surprise a few people with how great a pick-up it is. Starting with the cabin, the materials and design are of impressive quality, humbling some more expensive rivals. The media system works well and the buttons dotted about the dashboard are chunky enough so those with bigger hands won’t struggle to adjust their heated seats. As for the seats themselves, heated and cooled front seats are standard on all but entry-level EX models.

Other equipment that is standard on all but entry-level models includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is run on an eight-inch touchscreen media system. As the most basic Musso comes without some great equipment, we’d recommend aiming for Rebel, Saracen or Rhino trim.

When it comes to deals, the SsangYong Musso can be a bit of a mixed bag. The good news is that, compared to rivals such as the Ford Ranger, brand new Musso models are a bit of a bargain to start with. As the model is so rare, second-hand Mussos can be advertised with thousands of pounds worth of savings or very close to the list price - it is something of a lottery. As for load lugging ability, the Musso can carry a maximum of 1,085kg in its load bay - which is also wide enough to carry a standard Euro pallet - and tow up to 3,500kg.

7. Ford Transit Tipper

While all of the other pick-ups on this list are trucks that can easily double as your car outside of work and do a bit of off-roading, the Ford Transit Tipper can not. It is first and foremost a workhorse, offering a huge load bay. Its load area is designed to carry anything from building supplies to gardening equipment. As the name suggests, the rear can be raised to empty its contents with tipping controlled using a switch in the cabin.

Tipper models also come with sides that can be folded down, meaning you can get better access to load or unload gear from all sides. Pick-ups like these are quite rare - new trucks are often made to order as they are more niche than regular pick-ups, so there aren’t a glut of deals to choose from. That said they do crop up and there are also Chassis Cab variants (available from £14,790 or £0* per month), which offer much of the same only without a tipping feature.
