What is a hatchback?
A hatchback is a practical type of a car that falls between a more traditional saloon and a capacious estate. To access a hatchback’s boot is a large rear door called a tailgate, that almost always incorporates the rear window, creating a large opening when raised. Hatchbacks are generally available with two or four side doors, with the tailgate counting as an extra door. This is why hatchbacks with two side doors are called three-door cars, while those with four side doors are referred to as five-door models.
What’s the difference between a hatchback and an SUV?
In many cases, the differences between a hatchback and an SUV are fewer than you might think. Many SUVs are higher riding versions of hatchbacks and built on very similar underpinnings. For example, the Volkswagen T-Roc SUV has a similar body shape and interior space to the Golf hatchback, but its seating positions are higher and it looks a little more rugged. While SUVs are popular, many savvy buyers recognise that many hatchbacks offer very similar levels of practicality, while also being less expensive to buy and cheaper to run due to them being more fuel efficient.
Why should I buy a hatchback?
Although hatchbacks are a 1960s invention, their popularity only took hold the following decade with the arrival of models such as the Renault 5, Vauxhall Chevette and original VW Golf. By the 1990s it was unusual if car manufacturers didn’t sell a raft of hatchback models in different sizes. Despite booming SUV sales, even today a broad range of hatchback are available from compact models such as the Fiat 500 and Mini Hatch, to upmarket yet family-friendly choices, including the Audi A3 Sportback, BMW 1 Series Sports Hatch and Mercedes A-Class.
