What is a hatchback?

A hatchback is a practical type of a car that falls between a more traditional saloon and a capacious estate. To access a hatchback’s boot is a large rear door called a tailgate, that almost always incorporates the rear window, creating a large opening when raised. Hatchbacks are generally available with two or four side doors, with the tailgate counting as an extra door. This is why hatchbacks with two side doors are called three-door cars, while those with four side doors are referred to as five-door models.

What’s the difference between a hatchback and an SUV?

In many cases, the differences between a hatchback and an SUV are fewer than you might think. Many SUVs are higher riding versions of hatchbacks and built on very similar underpinnings.
